Outgoing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (in short GMA) inaugurated on 15 June 2010 one of her major legacy projects, the missing 7.6 kilometer link between Santo Tomas and Calamba connecting two major highways south of Manila. It all sounds so good as now you can save between 30 minutes and 2 hours because the old road was always heavily congested. The picture above is from 20 June and shows that GMA's farewell show was only a kind of soft opening or farce as we may call it in other parts of the world. The new link road is ready but final inspections are still ongoing...

Hard to believe?

Thierry and Jörn performing 'The Crow and The Fox' by Jean de La Fontaine, in a version adapted to the universe of the Mentawai: A shaman is walking in the forest, holding his lunch of baked sago in his hand. A monkey comes, grabs the sago and climbs to the top of a tree to eat it. But he shaman is clever. He--Mentawai shamans always smoke--starts flattering the monkey, so much so that the monkey drops the precious sago like the crow drops the cheese in de La Fontaine's fable. The shaman has his lunch again.
